Behind the lens: Kankurang Festival 2022

Two nights of the festival spirit and three days of the village charm. When going to Janjanbureh, and we have gone there many times now, we always feel disconnected from the world. But in a good way. What otherwise would feel like just a casual performance of a cultural group, in Janjanbureh, it becomes something mystical.

This year it has only been our second time attending Kankurang Festival. As much as we are sorry that we missed the first three editions, we are sure we will not missing one again. And this year, the festival was bigger and more vibrant than last year.

We saw performances of the masquerades, which we had only heard of but never saw perform yet. And we saw performances of some of our favourite masquerade groups, such as Zimbas and different types of Kankurangs. To sum it up, the enthusiasm of the Janjanbureh residents, the sound of the drums, the singing of the singers, dancing of the masquerades, and, we guess, also the spiritual powers of the magnificent baobab sacred trees on the festival site left us with mystical feelings all over again. Enjoy our glimpses.
