Beach of the month: Cape Point Beach

My Magazine 2022/03
3 min
When you have to identify a beach that stands out in The Gambia, sitting at the Cape Point Hotel, looking across the mouth of the Gambia River, to distant Barra – and that is when you realise the beauty of the clean and pristine sands where the Atlantic converges in the distance, and as your gaze sweeps from the cape to this little bay that curves all along, following the coastal highway leading to Denton Bridge.

The iconic Sunset beach Hotel (though unfortunately currently closed) sits strategically located at the tip of the cape, and as you move along the beach, the cleanliness and saplings of coconut trees strikes you – and you see the efforts of a community-based tree planting and beach cleaning groups – The Bakau Environmental Movement deserves kudos for constantly clearing up litter and planting palms and coconut trees that future generations will enjoy the fruits of.

The large Ocean Bay Hotel brags with its palm trees and popular sunbeds, with the number of fruit vendors and juice shops bordering the driveway that takes you past the horse stables, where you can get a ride to take you along this long pristine beach.

Calypso Restaurant is another landmark on this beautiful beach that you cannot miss – with its unique treetop bar/lounge and the famous crocodile pond that is a must-see spot in Cape point. The constant arrival of a wide variety of birds at this unique pond adds to nature's gift to Cape point.

The latest attraction on Cape points beach is the fast-developing Bojang River Lodge that sits on the edge of the creek that borders the far end of the bay – the owners brought the brand colours from Friends Bar & Restaurant to add to the vividness of Cape point. A lush garden surrounding six rooms and two apartments will soon get a company of the first-floor accommodations, two heart-shaped pools, bantaba area, stage, restaurant, and direct access to the beach to add up to the comfort of the all-embracing lodging distant from the overcrowded patches.

Gibbi's on the Beach invites diners to feast on the perfect sea view from the top or ground floor while indulging in an enjoyable meal.

One cannot give groovy Sunshine bar a miss – and the many bird watchers and tourists alike – enjoying a break between the mangroves and the creek that merge into the far end of Cape Points beach.

We don't have any doubt that this is easily among the best beaches that The Gambia offers.
