The fishing was closely fought and entered into by all the anglers with good humour and friendship. There was a tie for first place, and a count of the number of fish caught was needed to award the overall championship to Nick Westgarth for his fifth time. Second place was Joe Tabbal, and third was Richard Yates.
The heaviest single fish trophy was awarded to Phil O'Brien, who caught a 5.1 kg butterfish on day one of the competition. The runner-up was Joe Tabbal with a 2.92 kg butterfish, and third place was Nick Westgarth with 2.89 kg butterfish.
The presentation dinner took place at Vineyard on Sunday evening and was attended by the British High Commissioner, His Excellency David Belgrove OBE and his wife, along with the anglers, family and friends and representatives of sponsors of the event. The anglers were presented with their trophies, prize money and gifts from sponsor Cody's.
Bernard Westgarth of Fish The Gambia, who organised the event, said, "I would like to thank our sponsors, anglers, drivers and beach helpers for making this such a successful and enjoyable event. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2024, so spread the word to fellow anglers and friends". Details of next year's event will be posted on www.fishthegambia.com later this year.
