The AWLN was launched in collaboration with the African Union Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security and UN Women.
The event was led by the First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia, H.E Dr Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow and attended by ministers, governors, members of parliament, AU Special Envoy, Ambassadors, UN and ECOWAS officials and officials from Senegal, Liberia, South Africa and Germany.
The African Women Leaders' Network (AWLN) is a platform for African women leaders to connect, share experiences, and develop strategies for advancing women's leadership and participation in decision-making processes at all levels. The Gambian chapter was launched to support and empower women leaders in The Gambia, focusing on promoting their involvement in peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts.
The First Lady, H.E Dr Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, gave a powerful speech emphasising the importance of promoting women's leadership and participation in decision-making processes. She spoke about the challenges faced by women in The Gambia, including gender-based violence, lack of access to education and healthcare, and limited opportunities for economic empowerment.
Emphasis was placed on the need for women leaders to play a more active role in advancing peace and security on the continent and urged them to work together to address the root causes of conflict and violence.
