At the heart of the festival is the Kankurang, a sacred masquerade associated with Mandinka initiation rites. Covered in farra bark, fibres and leaves, the Kankurang represents discipline, protection and moral guidance. During the festival, this powerful cultural symbol steps into the public space, allowing both locals and visitors to witness an important expression of Gambian intangible heritage in a respectful and celebratory setting.
Over the years, the Janjanbureh Kankurang Festival has grown into a multi-day event that brings together culture bearers, artists, performers, communities and visitors from across The Gambia and beyond. The 2026 edition promises a rich and diverse programme combining tradition, creativity, gastronomy and community engagement.
The festival opens in the late afternoon with Taste of The Gambia, a culinary showcase at the festival grounds where visitors can enjoy traditional Gambian dishes accompanied by live traditional music.
The Official Opening Ceremony follows, featuring opening remarks from national and regional representatives, formally launching the festival.
The evening continues with Cultural Performance Night, bringing together a vibrant lineup of Gambian cultural expressions. Audiences can expect performances by Kanyaleng women, the Riti Fula group, storytelling sessions, high-energy choreographed performances by Flex Fusion, theatrical dramatizations by the Janjanbureh Theatre Group, and an electrifying Jamba Kankurang dance performance.
Festivities continue into the night with live entertainment by a Gambian artist from midnight onwards.
Saturday offers full-day immersion in Gambian creativity and culture. The morning begins with hands-on arts and crafts workshops, including tie-dye making, weaving, basketry, sand painting and traditional hair braiding, allowing visitors to actively participate rather than just observe.
Running throughout the day is the Made in The Gambia Trade Fair, showcasing locally produced goods, handicrafts and cuisine, providing direct support to Gambian artisans and small businesses.
In the late afternoon, the streets of Janjanbureh fill with colour during the Festival Parade, a lively procession of music, drumming, dance and cultural displays.
The evening hosts the Main Masquerade Festival, the highlight of the entire event, featuring powerful masquerade performances and traditional showcases at the main grounds.
The final day of the festival focuses on community, wellness and celebration. The morning Community Marathon brings together locals, athletes and visitors in a shared activity promoting health and unity.
In the afternoon, the festival concludes with a Kayak Race on the River Gambia, offering a spectacular and scenic finale on one of the country’s most iconic waterways.

Janjanbureh is one of The Gambia’s most culturally rich destinations, but reaching it independently can be challenging for visitors unfamiliar with the region. For those who want an authentic, well-organised experience, My Gambia offers a 3-day guided Kankurang Festival trip from 23 to 25 January 2026, combining the festival highlights with deeper exploration of the Central River Region.
This curated journey goes beyond the festival itself, offering meaningful encounters with nature, history and community life.
The journey begins with departure from the Senegambia area and travels inland to the heart of The Gambia. Along the way, guests visit the Wassu Stone Circles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by a boat trip in River Gambia National Park to observe hippos and the chimpanzee sanctuary.
Upon arrival in Janjanbureh, guests check into a lodge and have the option to join the opening festival activities in the evening.
The second day is dedicated to Janjanbureh itself and the festival highlights, including a guided town tour visiting historic sites, the Liberation Tree, the Kankurang Museum, local market and silversmith’s workshop. Guests take part in the Kankurang parade – one of the highlights of the festival - and enjoy the evening programme with live performances and masquerade displays.
On the final day, the experience concludes with a visit to Kerewan Samba Sira, where guests engage in community-based activities and visit the Village Museum dedicated to Fulani and Mandinka culture. Guests learn about cotton production, from seed to finished woven products, try their hand at the process, and share a local lunch with the community before returning to the coast.
