Kerewan Samba Sira Cotton Project

Kerewan Samba Sira Cotton Project

The Cotton Project at Kerewan Samba Sira is a visionary initiative aimed at reviving The Gambia's cotton industry and creating a unique, community-based tourism experience. In collaboration with the village of Kerewan Samba Sira, this project seeks to bring back the thriving cotton industry of the 1970s and 1980s, which once supported over 3,000 local farmers. Beyond cotton farming, the project will create opportunities for spinners, weavers, dyers, and tailors, while offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the entire production process; from seed to finished product.

The project is more than just a revival; it’s a holistic approach to sustainable development. By incorporating drip irrigation systems for year-round cultivation, the initiative ensures a consistent and eco-friendly water supply. The impact extends beyond agriculture, aiming to boost local economies by generating employment for guides, local shops, hotels, and restaurants. Through this project, The Gambia will not only re-establish itself as a hub for cotton but also foster a new wave of tourism that celebrates authentic, locally-made products. The Cotton Project at Kerewan Samba Sira is a step toward revitalizing the past, building a sustainable future, and empowering communities through collaboration and innovation.
