TRAVEL
For over 60 years, the Banjul Cultural Festival has been one of the country’s most recognised cultural celebrations. Held annually in the capital from 25th December to 1st January, the festival showcases traditional music, dance, costumes and community performances that reflect the diversity of The Gambia.

For many Gambians, this week-long celebration is an important platform to present cultural heritage publicly and pass traditions to younger generations. It brings together different ethnic groups and communities through performance, storytelling and shared celebration during one of the most vibrant times of the year.

For travellers, the timing makes it particularly attractive. Taking place during the peak holiday season, the festival offers visitors a unique opportunity to combine winter sun with authentic cultural immersion. The festival is centred in Banjul, making it accessible especially for those staying along the coast in Kotu, Kololi or Senegambia.

Beyond the festival, The Gambia is a destination where culture is lived daily. From traditional wrestling and drumming sessions to local markets and regional ceremonies, visitors can experience heritage in natural, community settings. The Banjul Cultural Festival simply amplifies this energy, concentrating it into one colourful week of music, pride and celebration.

If you are planning a trip to The Gambia, consider travelling between 25th December and 1st January to witness this historic event. It adds depth, rhythm and authenticity to your holiday experience.

The Gambia, small in size but big in experience.
