For Ghanaian travel content creator, tour operator, trip planner and travel consultant Efya Kimora, travelling across Africa is more than a personal dream. It is a mission to explore, understand and promote the continent from within.

Efya began her travel journey in her home country, Ghana, where she explored almost all the regions before expanding her travels across Africa and beyond. So far, she has visited 21 African countries and two Asian countries, with the goal of eventually visiting every country on the African continent.

Her recent trip to The Gambia was part of a wider West African journey covering Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea. For Efya, The Gambia was not just another stop on the map. It became a destination that surprised her with its warmth, hospitality and unforgettable welcome.

According to her, one of the first things that stood out was the friendliness of the Gambian people. She described The Gambia as truly living up to its name, the Smiling Coast of Africa, where people are welcoming, helpful and always ready to assist.

She believes more Africans should consider The Gambia as a travel destination. In her experience, the country offers beautiful beaches, affordability, easy interaction with locals and a strong sense of hospitality. She was especially touched by the way Gambians welcomed her, both in person and through social media, with many people sending messages and calls simply to say, “Welcome to The Gambia.”

For visitors planning a trip, Efya recommends exploring Kunta Kinteh Island, the Crocodile Pool, the Monkey Park, the River Gambia and the beaches. She also suggests taking a walk or run along the beach, enjoying a boat ride and experiencing the country beyond the usual tourist expectations.

Efya also used her experience to address common misconceptions about travelling in Africa. As a solo female traveller, she has visited countries such as Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Mali, destinations often described by others as dangerous. However, she said her own experiences were very different from the fears people often express.

She believes one of the biggest misconceptions stopping Africans from exploring Africa is the idea that the continent is too dangerous. At the same time, she acknowledged that travelling within Africa can be expensive and stressful, and she called on those who can improve regional travel systems to take action.

Her visit to The Gambia was also marked by strong support from individuals and organisations. After announcing on Facebook that she was coming to The Gambia, Step Stones Apartment in Bijilo offered to host her. Besenty Gomez also offered to help her explore the country. The Gambia Tourism Board later noticed her work and extended their support, while Kombo Beach Resort and Bakadaji Hotel also welcomed her with stays and experiences.

Efya expressed deep appreciation to the people of The Gambia, as well as to all the above-mentioned companies, for making her visit so memorable.

What began as another country on her African travel list became an experience she says she will never forget. The hospitality, smiles, beaches and kindness of the people changed her perception and gave her a deeper appreciation of The Gambia.

For Efya, the message is clear: Africans should explore Africa more. Every country has something unique to offer, and The Gambia is one destination that deserves a place on that list.
