The long-awaited introduction of the Selimiye Ferry on the Banjul–Barra route has taken an important step forward following a successful trial operation conducted by Negmar Investment Corporation.

According to information shared by the Embassy of Türkiye in The Gambia, the ferry recently completed its first test run, during which a tanker safely boarded via the ramp, completed a journey, and returned without any reported complications. The successful operation demonstrated the readiness of the ferry and its supporting infrastructure for the next phase of preparations.

The trial marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen one of The Gambia's most important transport links. The Banjul–Barra crossing serves thousands of passengers and vehicles every day, connecting the north and south banks of the country and playing a vital role in trade, tourism, and daily commuting.

While some technical and operational details still need to be finalized before the ferry enters regular service, the successful test provides confidence that progress is being made towards expanding ferry capacity and improving transportation efficiency on the route.

Reliable ferry services are essential for economic activity and regional connectivity in The Gambia. The addition of the Selimiye Ferry is expected to help ease movement across the River Gambia, improve travel experiences, and contribute to the country's broader infrastructure development goals.

As preparations continue, the successful trial offers a positive indication of what could soon become an important enhancement to one of the nation's busiest transport corridors.
