Soun is an ode to Joyce's great-grandmother, Kumba Soun Sanneh, an enterprising woman of her time. Derived from the Wolof word "Souna," which refers to a variety of millets used in Gambian cuisine, Soun pays homage to its roots while offering a contemporary dining experience.
Despite holding a full-time remote job, Joyce's desire for a workspace that doubles as a dining destination led to the inception of Soun. Recognizing the growing demand for venues conducive to remote work, Soun caters to young professionals and individuals seeking a welcoming environment to work and dine.
Originally envisioned as a juice bar, Soun evolved into a restaurant celebrating Afro-fusion cuisine with a twist. Joyce's personal touch is evident in the menu, which features dishes with unusual names inspired by her personal preferences.
Every dish at Soun is made from scratch, using locally sourced ingredients to ensure freshness and quality. Soun embraces a philosophy of wholesome cooking, with minimal to no sugar used in its dishes—opting instead for honey as a natural sweetener. No canned or boxed foods are used.
Innovative and inclusive, Soun goes the extra mile to accommodate diners with dietary restrictions. The dishes on the menu, which may contain allergy-causing ingredients, are marked with symbols empowering diners to make informed choices. There is even a key at the end of the menu to show you which symbol stands for which allergy.
Beyond its culinary offerings, Soun exudes warmth and sophistication. The bright yet soothing interior, adorned with vibrant greenery and rustic accents, creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Collaborating with an interior designer, Joyce designed a space that harmonizes elegance with comfort—a sanctuary where guests can work, dine, and unwind.
Picture-perfect off-white, olive-green, and black upholstered chairs add style and sophistication, while the bronze metal-mesh light shades cast a warm glow, illuminating the space with elegance. Magnificent palm plants in round white planters add a touch of natural beauty, while timber dowels create a chic separation between seating areas. Around the central pillar, they stand tall, a tribute to craftsmanship. Admire the stencilled design of leaves on one wall, a nod to nature's artistry. At Soun, every detail is perfected, creating an ambience of unparalleled charm.
The restaurant opened its doors to the public on Valentine's Day this year. Open from Tuesdays to Sundays, with Mondays reserved for rest, Soun welcomes guests from 7:30 am until 11 pm, while Fridays are from 2 pm to 11 pm. However, during Ramadan, Soun is open from 10 am to 10 pm on Tuesdays to Sundays, while Mondays remain off, and Fridays are from 2 pm to 11 pm.
Strategically located in Senegambia, adjacent to Smile Lounge, Soun offers more than just exceptional cuisine. Complimentary ginger tea, thoughtfully designed drink coasters, and non-slip bag hooks add to the convenience and comfort of guests.
With its fusion of flavours, welcoming ambience, warm lights, soft music, and smartly-clad staff in outfits which complement the decor, every aspect of Soun reflects Joyce's commitment to excellence.
