Start the day with a visit to Janjanbureh's colourful morning market. Meet the local traders and buy all the fresh ingredients that you need to cook your favourite Gambian meal, along with various side dishes and local juices to wash it all down.
Learn about the history of this fascinating town as you walk to Yusupha's compound, where you will be met with a warm African welcome by his family. Then it's time to get down to the business of peeling, chopping, pounding, heating, stirring and tasting your dishes, all under the expert guidance of Yusupha, his mum and his wife.
By two o'clock you should be sitting down to your delicious meal. When you are ready, say goodbye to the family and perhaps finish your experience with a visit to a local bar / restaurant for a well-earned cold drink.
Gambian food typically contains meat or fish, but vegetarians and vegans can also be accommodated. Just ask and we are happy to tailor your menu to meet your requirements.
The activity is not demanding. Apart from the heat and testing out your food preparation skills without modern cooking utensils, there is no heavy activity.
We recommend bringing sun protection (headwear, long, lightweight clothes, sunglasses, sun cream) and mosquito repellents. Make sure you bring enough water. We recommend comfortable wear.
