In a powerful blend of fashion, identity and regional connection, Gambian designer Yaws was recently invited by the Senegalese Ambassador to showcase her brand during the celebration of Senegal’s 66th Independence Anniversary at African Princess Beach Hotel.

As the only Gambian designer featured, her presence marked more than a creative showcase. It stood as a symbol of Senegambia unity, where shared history, culture and future continue to connect two nations beyond borders.

For Yaws, however, this moment carried a deeply personal meaning.

In her own words, the experience “meant more than just independence. It spoke to unity… to Senegambia… to shared history and future.” But beyond the public stage, it was also a quiet and emotional tribute to her late father, who passed on 04.04.20. His presence continues to guide her journey, shaping the vision and strength behind her work.

From this space of reflection, Yaws introduced CHARCOAL, a dark and elegant capsule collection inspired by strength, legacy and connection. Designed in honor of Senegambia, resilience and her father, the collection represents more than fashion. It tells a story of identity, remembrance and purpose.

Yaws has been part of the fashion industry for many years, consistently building her brand and showcasing her creations across multiple countries. Her work reflects a commitment to growth, creativity and representation, placing Gambian design within international spaces where it continues to gain recognition.

Her participation in such events highlights the importance of celebrating and supporting local brands. Fashion is one of the most powerful cultural exports, an international language that connects people across continents. When Gambian designers step onto regional and global platforms, they do not only represent themselves, but the country’s creative potential as a whole.

For The Gambia as a destination, this growing creative scene offers new opportunities. Visitors are not only discovering landscapes and hospitality, but also engaging with a dynamic cultural industry that invites collaboration. From fashion to media and design, there is increasing space for partnerships, exposure and exchange.

Yaws continues to stand as a strong voice within this movement. With new and more meaningful projects already in preparation, her journey is evolving, carrying both personal legacy and national pride forward.

This is more than a moment. It is a direction.

Stay tuned.
