Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. One of the most significant aspects of Ramadan is the daily breaking of the fast, known as Iftar. In The Gambia, Iftar is not only a religious observance but also a cherished cultural tradition that brings families and communities together in a spirit of unity and gratitude.

Iftar is the evening meal with which Muslims break their fast during the month of Ramadan, typically at sunset. In The Gambia, Iftar is observed with reverence and joy. Families gather at home or in mosques to break their fast together, often with dates, water, tea, bread, or porridge.

Common foods prepared for Iftar in The Gambia include dishes such as Domoda (peanut stew), Benachin (one-pot rice dish), Yassa (marinated grilled meat, chicken or fish), fried fish, chips, mashed potatoes, salads, fruits, and other vegetables. And also specialities such as Chakry (millet couscous pudding), porridge, bush teas, Boabab juice and Bissap (hibiscus drink) are often enjoyed during Iftar in The Gambia.

One traditional custom is to bring people together before breaking the fast as a community, followed by sharing food and blessings with family, friends, and neighbours. Families often invite relatives, friends, and neighbours for Iftar, promoting a sense of togetherness and solidarity within the community.

Muslims often recite the dua (supplication) "Allahuma inni lakasumtu wabika Amantu Wa'alaika Tawakkaltu wa'ala Riz Kika Aftartu" for breaking the fast, expressing gratitude for the sustenance provided by Allah.

The observance of Iftar may vary based on regional customs and cultural influences, with different communities adding unique traditional food and drinks for the occasion.

Tourists have the opportunity to witness and participate in Iftar gatherings with local families and communities, providing them with a deeper understanding of Gambian culture and traditions through attending such gatherings organized by groups, mosques or individuals at their various places.

Tourists can often arrange to join local families for Iftar through culturally organized trips with locals, homestays, or community-based tourism initiatives, offering a firsthand experience of Gambian hospitality and Ramadan traditions.
