KNOW
Ebbeh is a beloved street food in The Gambia, featuring a delightful mix of cassava, smoked fish, shrimp, crabs, crab meat, and seasonings. This one-pot creamy dish is typically enjoyed like a soup, offering a tangy zing from tamarind and lime.

It can also be prepared with sweet potatoes or yam. Known for its healthy and balanced ingredients, Ebbeh can be customized to become a nutritional powerhouse. For added flavour, you can season and steam the crabs before incorporating them into the dish.

Ingredients

  • Cassava (peeled and cut into chunks)
  • Smoked bonga fish (bones and fins removed)
  • Smoked catfish (bones and fins removed)
  • Crab (cut into halves)

  • Hot peppers
  • Hot red pepper powder
  • Lemon powder
  • Salt
  • Maggi or Jumbo cubes
  • Tamarind (dissolved in warm water)
  • Cassava powder (to thicken the soup)

Preparation

  1. Boil the cassava until tender.
  2. Once cooked, pound it with the hot peppers and return the mixture to the pot.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients - palm oil, seafood, hot red pepper powder, lemon powder, salt, Maggi or Jumbo cubes, and tamarind.
  4. Continue to simmer until all ingredients are thoroughly cooked.
