Juvenile Green Sea Turtle Rescue and Release TODAY

IMPACT
Yesterday, a juvenile Green Sea Turtle was brought to Luc Paziaud, owner of Kartong Reptile Farm. The individuals who brought the turtle said they had bought it from fishermen, most likely as accidental bycatch.

Luc immediately did the right thing. He explained that under The Gambia’s wildlife laws, it is strictly forbidden to capture, kill, or sell sea turtles. Thanks to this awareness, the turtle was saved and not killed.

Luc then contacted the turtle conservation volunteer team at Gunjur Beach. Lamin Jassey and Bubacarr “Bless” Sidiq Saho responded quickly, and the turtle is now being cared for and closely observed at CETAG’s Turtle Village. The turtle is in good condition and responding well.

Before release, the team will collect all necessary data as part of ongoing research and conservation efforts. The turtle will be safely released back into the ocean tomorrow, where it belongs.

Turtle poaching and bycatch remain serious challenges in The Gambia. This rescue highlights the continued need for public awareness, education, and strong cooperation between conservationists, fisherfolk, and coastal communities.

Special thanks to Luc for his responsibility, quick action, and strong commitment to wildlife protection and conservation.
