The inauguration was announced by the Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, in collaboration with the Gambia Ports Authority, and in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The new ferry is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency, safety and reliability of one of the country’s busiest crossings. The Banjul–Barra route serves thousands of passengers and vehicles daily, making it a key link for trade, tourism and everyday movement.
With increased capacity and improved features, the ferry aims to reduce waiting times and provide a smoother travel experience for both residents and visitors. This development forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure and support economic growth.
For travelers, the Barra crossing remains not only a practical route but also a unique experience on the River Gambia, offering insight into daily life in the country.
The introduction of the new ferry represents a key investment in national connectivity and a positive step forward for The Gambia’s transport system.
