Start of the journey

About the Program

As a volunteer in our beautiful tree nursery, you will help maintain the nursery and vast garden. Our mission is to improve livelihoods through agricultural innovation and environmental protection. This is the essence of being a tree nursery volunteer at Reforest the Future Gambia. In the Gambia, and Africa as a whole, we are facing critical periods of deforestation, and food security is a major concern for the coming decades.

What To Expect

  • You will wake up in the tree nursery under the canopy of a mahogany tree, surrounded by the sound of birds chirping.
  • Take a stroll around the beautiful tree nursery. You can choose to help feed the animals on-site or assist in the tree nursery.

A Typical day at Work

Help maintain and improve our beautiful tree nursery site. We aim to set an example of reforestation in practice for the whole of Gambia.

  • Assist our specialized Reforestation training team.
  • Join the fantastic tree nursery team and exchange techniques that you can practice at home.
  • Be part of our mission to improve livelihoods through Agroforestry innovation.

Leisure Activities

Despite being the smallest country in Africa, the Gambia has a lot to offer. You can explore various activities during your free time:

  • Upcountry is beautiful, and our team can provide tips for making the most of your time.
  • Highlights include Wassu Stone Circle, taking a boat ride with Gambia's wild hippos, or visiting the incredible chimpanzee rehabilitation project.

Is this experience suitable for families?

This trip is suitable for families with kids older than 5 years. We have very positive experiences with families coming for this type of travel. The kids were the ones who enjoyed the most.

How demanding is the experience?

The volunteering experience in the field can be quite exhaustive due to the heat and a smaller amount of physical work. You will however have more than enough time to recover your strength.

How can I prepare myself?

Pack everything you need for your basic needs. We recommend having a Gambian SIM number, as accessibility to the internet is sometimes a problem. We also recommend bringing a power bank. Make sure you pack mosquito repellents, trekking covered shoes and comfortable wear.

Interview with environmental activist Ahmed Manjang

Ahmed Manjang is one of the most faithful environmental activists in The Gambia. Coming from the settlement of Gunjur, which is located in the most southern part of the Gambia, he has been involved in many conservation programs and is also a member of few different organisations which are trying to create an impact in the field of eco-tourism and sustainable development.
