Fatou will meet you at the location agreed (Art Cafe, Kololi, place of your stay, at the beach or another location).
Transport to the agreed location can be arranged for an additional price.
Fatou will introduce the process of making baskets and plates of different types from the dried grass and colourful strands. She will share with you how she learned the skills and how she gets the materials to create different designs. The whole process of making a basket can take up to two days, and it takes some practice to learn how to start plaiting the basket from scratch. You will test your skills under the supervision of Fatou and finish the beautiful souvenir that will remind you of a unique experience in a workshop that lasts between 3 to 4 hours.
Transport can be arranged for an additional price.
You can decide on the location where the workshop will be taking place. You can also decide which type of product you want to create (either plate or basket) and the colours you want to use. The workshop usually takes about 4 hours but if you decide on a more demanding product making, the workshop time can be extended.
For the workshop to be effective, the maximum number of attendees should be 4.
Fatou is the eldest child of her parents, and in The Gambia, the first-born sons and daughters have a responsibility and an essential role in every family, which is not always the easiest.
Coming from a remote village with no high school, Fatou had to move to the capital to study. She enrolled in 10th grade, but her parents could not financially support her, so Fatou had to look for a job. Going to school and working was not easy, and Fatou dropped out of high school and continued to work to support herself and her family.
Making one basket takes a considerable amount of time and patience. It starts with collecting grass from rural areas and then sitting down for several hours or days to finish the product. Fatou likes to accept custom orders and fulfil customers' wishes. We admire her diligence, perseverance, will and desire to work.
If you want to support Fatou by making your own unique handmade souvenir, book your spot at the workshop with her.
Experience. Exchange. Impact.
We do believe it's time for another adventure. Don't spend all of your time in The Gambia in one place. Go out and explore! There are so many beautiful experiences waiting for you. Let us help you pick one - and take care of all the rest.
