Day 1

Sunrise kayaking

Fishing Shore

The Tanji fishing shore is a bustling and vibrant coastal hub located along The Gambia's Atlantic coastline. It serves as one of the country's most important fishing centers, where colorful fishing boats, locally known as pirogues, line the shore. Fishermen bring in daily catches of fish like bonga, sardines, and barracuda, creating a lively atmosphere as vendors, buyers, and processors gather to trade. Day 2

Gunjur Turtle Village

Night Tutle Nest Monitoring

A night patrol to find turtle nesting in Gunjur is an exciting and educational experience for those interested in wildlife conservation and marine ecology. Organized by local conservation groups, such as the Gunjur Environmental Protection and Development Group (GEPADG) and the Conservation of Sea Turtles and Ecotourism Association (CETAG), these patrols typically occur during the nesting season, which runs from May to October.

Participants join trained guides and volunteers on the beach at night, equipped with flashlights and the knowledge needed to identify nesting sites. The patrols focus on monitoring the beaches for female sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. Guides explain the nesting process, share insights about the different species of turtles, and educate participants on the threats these animals face.

During the patrol, participants may have the opportunity to witness the nesting process, as well as observe the tracks left in the sand. If hatchlings are found, the group may assist in safely releasing them into the ocean, an unforgettable experience that contributes directly to conservation efforts.

Day 3

Precious Plastic Recyling

Joining the Precious Plastic recycling team in Gunjur to collect plastic waste is a rewarding and impactful way to engage with the community while promoting environmental sustainability. Precious Plastic initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste through innovative recycling methods, and the Gunjur team focuses on collecting plastic materials from the local area.

During your visit, you’ll work alongside passionate volunteers and community members to gather plastic waste from beaches, streets, and other public areas. This hands-on experience not only helps to clean up the environment but also raises awareness about the importance of reducing plastic pollution.

Once the plastic waste is collected, the team will take you through the recycling process, demonstrating how to transform the waste into beautiful and functional souvenirs. Participants can learn various techniques such as shredding, melting, and molding the plastic into unique items like jewelry, keychains, or decorative pieces.

This workshop not only fosters creativity and craftsmanship but also emphasizes the importance of recycling and repurposing materials to minimize waste. By the end of the experience, you’ll leave with your own handmade souvenirs and a deeper understanding of the impact of plastic pollution and the efforts being made to combat it. Kartong

Reptile Farm

Visiting Gambia’s only reptile farm in Kartong is an exciting opportunity to learn about the diverse reptilian species found in The Gambia and their importance to the ecosystem. The farm offers a unique and educational experience, showcasing various reptiles, including snakes, lizards, and tortoises, in a safe and controlled environment.

During your visit, you’ll have the chance to explore the facilities and observe the reptiles in their enclosures. Knowledgeable guides will provide information about each species, including their habitats, behaviors, and conservation status. The farm aims to educate visitors about the role reptiles play in the ecosystem and the need for their protection, especially given the threats they face from habitat loss and human activity.

FAQ

How demanding is the trip?

The trip is easy to moderate. The most activity expected from you is when you have to patrol the beach at night if you decide to). It will include some walking, but there will be no serious activity. If you decide to go for all activities possible the trip is quite long.

What should I bring with me?

We recommend to bring sun protection (headwear, long lightweight clothes, sunglasses, sun cream) and mosquito repellents.

Can I adjust the trip?

The trip is organised by the Insitute of Travel and Tourism of The Gambia (ITTOG) in collaboration with Ninki Nanka Encounters (NNE).

ITTOG specialises in hands-on training mainly in the Travel and Tourism sectors with special emphasis on travel agency, tour operations, tour guiding, ground operations, events management, entrepreneurship/business skills development, responsible/sustainable tourism, community-based tourism, and general tourism business management.

NNE Foundation is a small, new Gambian charity and UK community interest company (CIC) working towards the responsible development of the Ninki Nanka Trail as a community-based tourist destination.

They work on projects with communities, tourism businesses and local government to develop experiences, products and community-based tourism designed to create inspiring, cultural interaction between travellers and local people and use tourism to create livelihood opportunities for host communities along The River Gambia.
