Imagine stepping into a place where every page whispers: you matter, you matter, you matter…
Like slicing open the perfect orange, discovering a book should be a sensory experience — words flowing like orange juice dripping...
Teenagers and young adults deserve a place that gives them the power to do language, to paraphrase Toni Morrison, the esteemed American novelist and editor.
The Orange Library is and has always been, a community effort. People from around the world have come together to create this space. Once the location was found, the local community rallied to maintain the library daily. Ismaila, an electrician, volunteers his time and skills to ensure proper lighting, fans, and extra sockets and even helps with cleaning at times.
Mimi has been a steadfast supporter since day one, assisting with whatever is needed. Additionally, a group of young adults, who call themselves the library's panel of experts, actively participate in all decisions. Any young individual in The Gambia is welcome to join this panel, as The Orange Library is by, of, and for the youth of The Gambia.
The Orange Library caters to the educational and recreational needs of Gambian youth. With many visitors currently in the midst of exams, the library provides tutoring support. Otherwise, it serves as a haven where young people can read, create art, and find inspiration using the materials available.
The library will close in June to reflect on the valuable feedback and critiques it has received since the beginning of the year, reopening on September 2nd, 2024.
The Orange Library is more than just a library; it is a vibrant community space where young adults can explore, learn, and grow.
