Since its inception in 2020, the HerMaP Gambia project has sought to empower heritage managers, foster sustainable practices, and build capacity within Gambia's cultural and governmental institutions. The initiative, co-funded by the European Union, has made significant strides in preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage while integrating it into sustainable tourism and community-based development efforts. By providing targeted training and increasing local involvement in heritage management, the project has helped safeguard Gambia’s historical assets and supported economic resilience through cultural preservation.
On Monday, 17 February 2025, the first of two events took place at the Ocean Bay Hotel in Banjul. The event celebrated the completion of training programs by the HerMaP Gambia project’s trainees. This gathering brought together key stakeholders, including the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) and local musicians, to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all those involved.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates to the trainees, which marked the culmination of their learning journey. The trainees shared testimonials about their experiences and how the project has equipped them with the skills needed to manage and promote Gambia’s cultural heritage sustainably.
The event commenced with opening remarks delivered by representatives from HERITΛGE, setting the tone for the proceedings. The EU representative then took the stage to deliver the keynote address, highlighting the importance of the HerMaP Gambia project in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Following this, a summary of the project's key outcomes and impact was shared, offering attendees a comprehensive understanding of its achievements. Trainees also had the opportunity to share personal testimonials, reflecting on the skills they acquired throughout the program and how they plan to apply these insights to the heritage sector in the future. The event concluded with a networking reception, where participants engaged in meaningful conversations, exploring opportunities for continued collaboration and future endeavors in heritage management.
The second event, held on Monday, 24 February 2025, was a HerMaP Gambia Closing Stakeholder Lunch, again at Ocean Bay Hotel. This gathering offered a platform for reflecting on the successes of the HerMaP Gambia project and discussing the potential for continued collaboration in the field of heritage management.
The lunch event provided a unique opportunity for representatives from the EU Delegation, the Gambian government, and various local communities to exchange ideas and strengthen their partnerships. Participants were invited to share their feedback, discuss future opportunities in heritage and tourism, and celebrate the project’s achievements.
The HerMaP Gambia project leaves a lasting legacy through its capacity-building initiatives, which have empowered over 200 individuals and trained more than 30 trainers. The project has supported ten key cultural heritage initiatives, including the enhancement of the Fort Bullen Visitor Center, the creation of Fulani Mud House Museums, and the revitalization of the Juffureh Village Museum. It has also played a crucial role in documenting Gambia's Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and promoting sustainable community tourism projects.
