This year, The Gambia shines brightly as four of its own are celebrated for their exceptional dedication and influence in promoting the country as a prime destination on the global tourism stage. The awards ceremony is set to take place on September 23rd, 2024, at the Eko Hotels Convention Center in Lagos, Nigeria.
The four distinguished winners are -
Sheikh Ahmed Tejan Nyang is a towering figure in The Gambia’s tourism industry having climbed the ranks from a humble Tourism Officer to the esteemed position of Director of Tourism.
Sheikh Tejan’s career began in 1973 as a labourer and dishwasher at The Atlantic Hotel in Norway. His passion and dedication quickly propelled him through various roles, from receptionist and night receptionist manager to disk jockey, assistant nightclub manager, rooms division manager, and eventually, general manager.
Upon returning to The Gambia, Sheikh Tejan worked with Saga Tours, one of Norway’s largest tour operators, as a sales consultant before founding West African Tours, one of the leading ground operators in The Gambia. He played a pivotal role as the coordinator of The Gambia’s tourism master plan and served as chairman of the ECOWAS Hotel Classification Committee. Sheikh Tejan’s influence in the tourism industry is further highlighted by his brief tenure with the United Nations as National Coordinator of The International Year of Volunteers.
Adama Njie, with over 20 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry, has been a driving force in promoting The Gambia as a top tourist destination. His career began at Gambia International Airlines, where he served as ground operations staff and later as Head of the Cargo Unit. In 2012, Njie joined the Gambia Tourism Board(GT Board) as Director of Marketing, where he led the Board’s marketing efforts for a decade, significantly enhancing the country’s tourism profile.
In September 2022, Njie was appointed Director of Tourism Promotion at the GT Board’s UK office, based at the Gambian High Commission. His role encompasses developing and coordinating marketing strategies for the UK, Ireland, and Central and Eastern Europe, further expanding The Gambia’s presence in these key markets. Njie’s academic achievements include a Master’s Degree in Business Management and a BA(HONS) in Travel and Tourism, both from UK institutions, underscoring his expertise and leadership in the tourism sector.
As a Nigerian journalist based in The Gambia, he has made a significant impact on the country’s tourism and cultural sectors through his dedicated reporting. With a passion for tourism, culture, and hospitality, Saliu’s work has highlighted the vibrant cultural heritage and tourism potential of The Gambia. His writing, particularly through his Tourisphere column, has provided invaluable insights into the industry, earning him recognition as a key influencer in the region.
Saliu’s contributions extend beyond journalism; he has collaborated with various tourism stakeholders, including the Gambia Hotel Association and educational groups, to promote The Gambia’s tourism offerings. His role as a committee member of the annual Akwaaba African Travel Market Exhibition in Nigeria further cements his influence in the African tourism landscape.
His journey from a clerk in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to Director General of the Gambia Tourism Board is a testament to his hard work and dedication. Over the years, Abubacarr has held various roles, including Product Development Officer, Quality Control and Classification Inspector, and Manager of Quality Control, Licensing, and Enforcement. In 2020, he was appointed Director General of the GT Board, where he continues to lead the organization with distinction.
Camara’s contributions to the tourism industry are complemented by his academic achievements, including a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). His leadership and expertise have been recognized on international platforms, including his role as a speaker at the UNWTO Global Summit in the Maldives.
These four exceptional individuals have not only elevated The Gambia’s tourism sector but have also positioned the country as a key player on the global tourism stage. Their recognition at the African Travel 100 Global Leaders Awards is a proud moment for The Gambia, celebrating the dedication and achievements of its tourism leaders.
