The Gambia’s tourism sector has achieved a remarkable milestone, with four distinguished professionals receiving the prestigious African Travel 100 Global Leaders Award for 2024. These awards, presented by the Akwaaba African Travel Market, recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the tourism industry in their respective countries.

This year, The Gambia shines brightly as four of its own are celebrated for their exceptional dedication and influence in promoting the country as a prime destination on the global tourism stage. The awards ceremony is set to take place on September 23rd, 2024, at the Eko Hotels Convention Center in Lagos, Nigeria.

The four distinguished winners are -

1) Sheikh Ahmed Tejan Nyang - Head of School, Institute of Travel and Tourism of Gambia (ITTOG).

Sheikh Ahmed Tejan Nyang is a towering figure in The Gambia’s tourism industry having climbed the ranks from a humble Tourism Officer to the esteemed position of Director of Tourism.

Sheikh Tejan’s career began in 1973 as a labourer and dishwasher at The Atlantic Hotel in Norway. His passion and dedication quickly propelled him through various roles, from receptionist and night receptionist manager to disk jockey, assistant nightclub manager, rooms division manager, and eventually, general manager.

Upon returning to The Gambia, Sheikh Tejan worked with Saga Tours, one of Norway’s largest tour operators, as a sales consultant before founding West African Tours, one of the leading ground operators in The Gambia. He played a pivotal role as the coordinator of The Gambia’s tourism master plan and served as chairman of the ECOWAS Hotel Classification Committee. Sheikh Tejan’s influence in the tourism industry is further highlighted by his brief tenure with the United Nations as National Coordinator of The International Year of Volunteers.
