The tree planting initiative is part of the larger “Plant a Tree for Mother Earth” campaign, led by India’s Prime Minister, which aims to plant 800 million trees by March 2025, with an ambitious target of 1.4 billion trees over the next two years. This global effort focuses on greening public spaces, with embassies and high commissioners playing a crucial role in its success.
The ceremony at Calypso Beach saw the presence of notable figures, including the Honourable Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, representatives from the National Environment Agency, and local media. Their participation highlighted a collective commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.
In addition to planting the trees, the Indian community generously donated essential tools to Green-Up Gambia’s team. This included wheelbarrows, spades, watering cans, gloves, and raincoats, all of which will support the maintenance of the newly planted coconut trees, ensuring their growth and integration into the coastal ecosystem.
The day also featured a special certificate distribution ceremony in Banjul to honour Gambian students who completed their degrees through the e-VidyaBharti Project. This initiative, launched during the Third India-Africa Summit in October 2015, provides scholarships for degrees at leading Indian institutions and has so far benefited 252 students across various fields of study. The ceremony highlighted the impact of international collaboration on local academic achievement.
Overall, the events of the day underscored the strong bilateral relations between India and The Gambia. The successful tree planting initiative, the generous support for environmental sustainability, and the celebration of educational achievements collectively showcased the commitment of both nations to advancing their partnership in environmental and educational spheres. The day concluded with heartfelt congratulations to the graduates and a renewed dedication to strengthening ties and collaborative efforts between India and The Gambia.
