ABOUT Sabar Drumming Class

Experience part of the Wolof tradition by learning a riddim passed on from generation to generation of sabar drum players. Enjoy a 2-hour workshop on the beach or at your prefered location.

Ali will meet you at the location agreed (can be a place of your stay, at the beach or another location). 

Transport to the agreed location can be arranged for an additional price. 

What to expect

from drumming workshop

Learn about the importance and meaning of the sabar drums in the history and present traditions of the Wolof tribe. Know about the power of the drum and the knowledge that drummers should possess to be allowed to play it.

Your teachers will teach you a riddim of a praising song to celebrate the champions. Through the explanation, you will learn about the different types of drum beats and combine them to perform a riddim without the help of your instructors.

End of tour

Transport can be arranged for an additional price.

Can we adjust the activity?

You can decide on the location where the workshop will be taking place. The workshop usually takes 2 hours, but if you decide on a more intensive class (private class only), the workshop time can be extended. 

Ali performs with the Gambia Zimba Cultural Group

Do you know about Zimbas? They are traditional masks of Wolof tribe. Their performance is always accompanied with sabar drums. Ali occasionally joins the drummers in their performance.

Ali Faye

Ali is a professional sabar drum player, instrumentalist and artist. He is a son of a famous Gambian griot, Maas Faye, who passed on knowledge and meaningful tradition through sabar riddims. As a member of a cultural group performing at weddings and naming ceremonies, he is also the carrier of the tradition.
