ABOUT Plait your own basket

We at My Gambia always love to explore new places and meet different people. And there is always something beautiful to highlight wherever we go and whoever we meet. And that's why we created My Gambia's platform – to highlight all the things, activities, people, places and stories that might not be heard or seen. We aim to spread the word about products, trips, activities and services, which helps create a memorable and unique experience for the visitors and impact local inhabitants by generating direct income. Fatou Sowe is one of the young women we met while searching for products made in The Gambia. Her story touched our hearts, and we decided to support her work by highlighting her talent and products.

OFFERED BY

Fatou

Fatou is the eldest child of her parents, and in The Gambia, the first-born sons and daughters have a responsibility and an essential role in every family, which is not always the easiest.
Coming from a remote village with no high school, Fatou had to move to the capital to study. She enrolled in 10th grade, but her parents could not financially support her, so Fatou had to look for a job. Going to school and working was not easy, and Fatou dropped out of high school and continued to work to support herself and her family.

Making one basket takes a considerable amount of time and patience. It starts with collecting grass from rural areas and then sitting down for several hours or days to finish the product. Fatou likes to accept custom orders and fulfil customers' wishes. We admire her diligence, perseverance, will and desire to work.
If you want to support Fatou by making your own unique handmade souvenir, book your spot at the workshop with her.

Experience. Exchange. Impact.
