Traditional Dish Recipe: Pepper Soup with fish

Pepper soup is maybe not an everyday meal on the menu of the Gambian family but is for sure one of the favourite choices in times when the seasons are changing, which is causing many colds. Pepper soup is believed to be good food for a person who caught a cold because it brings back appetite. Also, the extensive amount of hot pepper in the soup makes a person sweat out the sickness, while nutritious fish gives back some energy.

COOKING INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 fresh fish
  • 3 tsp of lime
  • a pinch of salt
  • 2 onions
  • 2 fresh tomatoes
  • 1 small Maggi cube
  • 1 big hot pepper
  • one tablespoon of tomato paste (optional)

COOKING DIRECTIONS:

Remove the fish scales, wash and cut fish into portions. Season it with one tablespoon of lime juice and a pinch of salt. Peel, wash, chop and pound onion with pepper. Wash and chop tomatoes. Pound it with onion.

Add water to the cooking pot and heat it. Add the pounded mixture and allow to boil for some time.
Add the tomato paste (optional). Add the fish and let it boil until it’s cooked. Don’t let fish overcook since it will cause fish to fall apart. Serve it in a bowl and eat while hot.

NOTE: Pepper soup can also be served with rice or eaten like a soup with no side dish.
