St. James Island, which was later renamed Kunta Kinteh Island, is strategically situated within the mouth of the River Gambia. This island was used as a base during the Atlantic Slave Trade. UNESCO has declared the island as a World Heritage Site.
Departing from your hotel, we proceed to the harbour of Banjul, where we embark on the ferry, sailing us to Barra, where we will join a 4x4 to take the route to Juffureh and James Island.
This excursion will also enable you to explore the countryside on the North Bank of The River Gambia.
Before we visit the island, we take a walk for ten minutes to the famous village of Juffureh, the ancestral home of Kunta Kinteh, the main character in the book Roots. Here we shall visit the museum before proceeding to visit the Kinteh Family.
After visiting the main institutions in the village, we have lunch in Albreda, and later join a pirogue to go to James Island. When we return to Albreda, we drive back to Barra, and we make some stops on the way to see the local way of living in the villages.
