Modern sustainable technologies of Footsteps

One of Gambia’s most prestigious eco-lodges, it is proud to be at the forefront of Responsible Tourism. We talked with its founder David, about its humble beginnings, development and eco-technologies used in the lodge.

Footsteps Eco Lodge, The Gambia, started as an idea to help the indigenous people of The Gambia. After holidaying in The Gambia for the first time in 1999, David saw hardship and struggle like he had never seen before in his own life and wanted to help if he could.

Taking care of their staff was a first and top priority. During all these years, they have also started to take care of the environment and have become one of the most advanced and well-known in the field of ecotourism.

Being an Eco-lodge is not just about having some solar panels on the roof; it's a way of life centred on the conservation of flora and fauna and the well-being of their custodians.

They have zero tolerance for single-use plastics and, to that end, supply their guests with their very own reusable lifetime water bottles plus free filtered water for anyone staying or visiting Footsteps. Learn more about reducing your use of plastic.

There is no waste in nature, so composting is a great way to get the most out of any surplus you create in the kitchen or garden.

They don't burn; they mulch and return to the earth, which gives them fresh fruit and vegetables straight to their open-view kitchen, where their top-class chefs prepare some of the finest food you will find anywhere in The Gambia.

Suppose you are a business in The Gambia and want to learn more about sustainable practices. In that case, The Footsteps Team are happy to show you around and give advice on ways to be not only environmentally responsible but also socially responsible too.
