While most visitors to Gambia are hanging around in the main tourist areas on the coast, some have are already venturing out to local communities where they can find tranquillity and experience the best Gambian cultures. Over the past four years, more Gambian communities in the rural areas have opened their homes to visitors, inviting visitors to get a taste of local food or to explore the local culture.

As part of the highly rated Ninki Nanka Trail, Jamali opened its gates to visitors in 2020 and has since then attracted numerous visitors from all around the world who come there to experience and learn about the Gambian Fula traditions.

The experience is an exotic mixture of history and cultural traditions and highlights include the fascinating welcome with traditional music and dances, an interactive discussion with the village chief, a visit to the wood carver's compound, a lovely walk around the women's organic garden, and tasting the delicious peanut and rice pudding called chrah-gerteh cooked by the local women of the village. Visitors are taken through the whole process of preparing and cooking the churah-gerteh before tasting it.

The old traditional kitchen in which the churah-gerteh was prepared has been replaced with a brand new kitchen built from eco-friendly compressed earth blocks with improved cooking stoves thanks to the princely funding by the Santander Bank through their Best Africa Foundation that seeks to promote social and economic development by supporting female entrepreneurs and their local environment. The foundation provides technical and financial support to enterprises that promote the employment of women that foster sustainability - economic, social and environmental - and that contribute in an inclusive manner to the development of their community.

The Jamali Community-Based Tourism Village experience is part of the Ninki Nanka Trail, a 6-night/7-day visit designed for small and more adventurous groups interested in learning about Gambian culture, rural life and interaction with local people. Interested? We invite you to experience it with us!
