Gambian Sounds: Bro K

My Magazine 2022/05
2 min
Sulayman Singhateh, a.k.a. Bro K, is a versatile Gambian Afro Manding Artist, born in Serrekunda and raised in Sabaa and Ebo Town. His artist name Bro K was his nickname even before he started his music career, so later, he simply decided to keep it. The word "arthrinka" that is part of his full artist name represents a type of rice he grew on his farm back in Sabaa, where people always called him by this nickname.

Bro K has been in the music industry for twelve years since he started in 2010. The first song he recorded was "Sunkuto Fanjebalo", which was also his first music hit, which made him known in the music world. With the song, he highlighted the problem of bleaching and try to encourage women to appreciate their natural beauty.

So far, he has produced two music albums.

The people who have contributed a lot to his music career are Shy Boy Entertainment, Badibunka, Lamin Makalo, Buba Suwareh, and the Eterian fan base.

Although the path of the upcoming musician is never easy, there was never a time when he wanted to give up. One of the biggest challenges faced by Bro K in his journey, though, was the lack of support from his parents. It took some time to convince them that him being a musician was not the worse idea.

However, the most significant change in his career has been over the last two years since he started getting more lyrics for his songs. He now has more concerts, and he also organises shows, one of them being the "Dorkuwo Laafa", which became a successful one. Most importantly, he is working on his albums. His latest project is his album "Situationo", and he is about to release his new music video soon. His collaborations with artists like Billy Boy, Sona Jobarteh, and his Ghanaian friend will all be part of the album.

In five years, he wants to see himself become an internationally and worldwide known musician.

Bro K uses his music to speak to people about life and life challenges, especially the young ones. He wants to spread the message that they can make it home, therefore discouraging them to travel backway.

Finally, the message Bro K wants to send to the world is that we should all love each and have sympathy for one another.
