Bird of the Month: Senegal Parrot

My Magazine 2023/04
3 min
The Senegal Parrot, also known as the Senegal Parakeet, is a small to medium-sized bird native to West Africa, primarily found in countries such as Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, and Sierra Leone. It is a popular pet bird due to its intelligence, charming personality, and ability to mimic human speech.

The Senegal Parrot typically measures around 23 centimetres in length and weighs around 120 to 140 grams. They have a mainly green body with a grey head, yellow and orange belly, and a dark beak. Their eyes are surrounded by a white ring, and they have a short, square tail. The sexes are similar in appearance, but males may have slightly larger heads.

Senegal Parrots are highly social and intelligent birds that can bond closely with their owners. They have a curious and playful nature and enjoy interacting with toys and other enrichment items. They are also known for their vocal abilities and can learn to mimic a range of sounds, including words and phrases.

In the wild, Senegal Parrots feed on a variety of fruits, nuts, and seeds. In captivity, they require a balanced diet that includes a mix of seeds, pellets, fruits, and vegetables. They are relatively hardy birds and can live up to 25 years or more with proper care.
