Behind the lens: Ninki Nanka

My Magazine 2022/03

The mysterious Ninki Nanka Trail is an exploration through the land of a mystical snake-like dragon with shiny scales that lives on the River Gambia. Locals believe that this rarely seen creature created all the creeks of The River Gambia.

If Ninki Nanka sees you first, you will be blessed with prosperity, wealth and abundance. But if you are the first one to set your eye on the hiding dragon, you will be cursed with sickness and possibly even death.

One day, a young hunter was spotting for Ninki Nanka on the river creeks. He was determined to become rich and lucky, so he took the mirror with him. When the glorious creature saw its reflection, it disappeared in the most hidden branches of The River Gambia. The hunter was the last one to be seen by it and the last one to become rich and lucky as he married the king’s daughter.

Enjoy the photo glimpses of the Ninki Nanka trail and book your own experience with us. Although the mysterious dragon might not spot you, you will be rich with experience and wisdom. The Ninki Nanka trail offers a unique adventure of a series of natural and cultural sites, experiences and communities living along the River Gambia. It tells the historical and contemporary story of Gambian life, legends and spiritual beliefs.
