Glimpses of: Inauguration of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara memorial at The Fajara Club

On the 16th of May, 2021, the inauguration of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara memorial, the unveiling of the bust of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara and the renaming of Fajara Golf Course as the Sir Dawda Jawara-Fajara Club Golf Course was held at Fajara.

This initiative was held to commemorate the late president and his contribution to The Golf Course.

Sir Dawda K. Jawara was a sportsperson and an enthusiastic golfer. In his last few months, he would visit The Golf Course on weekends and enjoy the company of golfers and caddies alike. It was during these visits before his unfortunate demise that the Fajara Club Chairman and Main Committee decided to honour his memory by erecting a bust of Sir Dawda K. Jawara at the entrance of the Golf Course. Committee decision was taken to rename the Fajara Club Golf Course. The location of the memorial will be converted into a memorial park in his honour.

The 97th birth anniversary of Sir Dawda K. Jawara was chosen as the best date to inaugurate his memorial. A special memorial tournament ˝Sir Dawda Jawara Memorial Golf Tournament,” was held for three days to commemorate the day. The tournament will become an annual event at the Fajara Gold Course.

The event was graced by Her Excellency Dr Isatou Touray, Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, representing His Excellency Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia. The Lord Mayor of Kanifing, represented by the Deputy Mayor. The Ambassador of the US Embassy in the Gambia, the family of late Sir Dawda K. Jawara represented by Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Junior and Mr Ebrima Jawara, the President of the Gambia Golf Association and more.

The event began with an opening remark and a welcoming remark by the Chairman, Mr Ram Mohan. He spoke about the late president’s contribution to the Golf Course, stating that he had supported the Golf Course and Golfers all over the country. The representative of the Jawara family, Sir Dawda K. Jawara Junior, said that his father would have been very surprised about this initiative and that he would be very happy. The Vice president Dr Isatou Touray praised the Golf Course and thanked The Fajara Club members for celebrating the founding father of the Gambia.

The unveiling of the bust and the renaming of the Golf Course was led by H.E. Dr Isatou Touray and Mr Ram Mohan, chairman of the Fajara Club.

Her Excellency, together with Golf Captain Mrs Tracey Horton and Mrs Anu Amrith, Social Secretary of The Club and the landscape designer of the memorial area, presented Sir Dawda Jawara Memorial Golf Tournament Awards. H.E. Dr Isatou Touray was then invited to inaugurate the renamed Golf Course also by striking a ball to hole nr.1. After cutting a delicious cake, the event continued with the interaction of the guests accompanied by food and refreshment in the club.
