Exploring Bakau

Brimming with life, its population doubling every decade or so, Bakau is an overgrown village that’s part shantytown, part desirable suburb, and part coastal resort. Spread over Kombo’s northernmost point, twelve kilometres from Banjul, Bakau includes busy, noisy Bakau Old Town, the salubrious Cape Point area, the less affluent Bakau New Town, and the elegant oceanside properties of Atlantic Road, which continues into Fajara.

For visitors, Bakau Old Town’s focal points are the areas around the junction of Atlantic Road and Sait Matty Road, with its banks, post and telephone offices, supermarkets and bitikos, and the tourist-oriented bengdula, or craft market, of Atlantic Road. Take a step or two off the main road here and you are immediately in urban Africa. Near the batik stalls and drum-makers of the bengdula, and almost directly behind the stalls selling fruits and vegetables to tourists and expats, is Bakau’s village market.

North of the Old Town is Cape Point, and this area, also known as Cape St. Mary, is a secluded part of town with a quiet, cul-de-sac atmosphere, home to diplomats and businessmen. The beach here is clean and pleasant. Cape Point marks the southwestern limit of the River Gambia where it meets the Atlantic, and the pale sands on the riverside are caught by peculiar cross-currents with waves lapping diagonally against the timber groynes. Round the point on the Atlantic side is the start of Bakau’s softly crumbling russet laterite cliffs: the beach here is only accessible at low tide and is swept clean by the ocean every high tide.

Bakau New Town is a residential area shaded by mature trees that burst gloriously into flower in the rainy season. Bakau New Town is overshadowed by the Independence Stadium, The Gambia’s principal sports venue, a large open arena surrounded by steeply banked seating. The whole district reverberates whenever there’s a major sporting fixture or a live music event – big names from the Senegambian music scene sometimes play here to sell-out crowds.
