ROOTS HERITAGE AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL

It's here, and it's about time to celebrate our Roots and Heritage.

With the greatest pleasure and honour, the Juffureh Albreda Youths Society (JAYS) hereby invite you all to the launch of the ‘Roots Heritage and Cultural Festival’ on Saturday, 2nd December 2023, in Juffureh/Albreda.

Subsequently, this will be an annual event to commemorate the International Day for the abolition of Slavery and also in remembrance of the Trans- Atlantic slave trade and its abolition, the latter of which will enable us to reflect on the atrocities committed during that era and the opportunity to celebrate ‘Roots’, our heritage and diverse cultures.

This year’s inaugural event will be marked with a symposium, followed by a tour of the slavery-related historical sites in the community and the nearby Kunta Kinteh Island (formerly James Island), and a cultural display of art, music and dances by local groups and individuals. The event will then be closed with a traditional night ‘Nuimi Kankurang’ dance.
